This Mechanical Engineer leads, designs and develops, verifies and validates laboratory consumables that are used with laboratory instruments for biological and chemical applications. This includes new designs and support for existing products. May also design and develop laboratory instruments. Works as a team member and independently as required, and with a wide degree of creativity. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Reports to the Senior Mechanical Engineer or the Director of Engineering.
Essential Responsibilities: The employee may be required to perform all or a combination of the following essential responsibilities as determined by business necessity.
- Plan, design and develop, and modify new and existing products. Design work will include, but is not limited to, high volume consumables, precision fluid handling and fluidics, mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies, and sheet metal enclosures.
- Model designs; create component specifications, drawings and detailed instructions for new or revised designs using SolidWorks.
- Prepare validation protocols and reports to support new designs and changes. Perform the validation testing required to support the new designs and changes.
- Access and approve design control changes to any material, product or process
- Qualify new materials and products within design control. Ensure prevention of defects in materials and product design.
- Design and develop tooling, fixtures and automated equipment for fabricating and testing consumable products
- Maintain appropriate records in accordance with procedures and policies, using laboratory notebooks.
- May provide consultation on complex projects and is considered to be a specialist for consumable development.
- Will work in a team environment with engineering, manufacturing and other support personnel to accomplish goals.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
- 2-3+ years’ experience; consumables design and electromechanical instrument design a plus.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks
- Sound knowledge of:
- Medical devices (preferred)
- Product development process
- Plastic part design for injection molding
- Fabrication processes: machining, sheet metal
- Tolerance analysis using geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Hands-on experience in the following areas is helpful:
- Cabling and wire harness design
- Acoustics background
- Familiarity with one or more of the following applications is a bonus:
